[WIP] Cheryl Texiera digital painting

I've been reading a lot about digital painting lately. Colors where always a mystery for me, since I'm more used to drawing, so I decided to dedicate some time to it. Along with Larry Wall's caricature, this is one my first, ever, experiments with digital painting. This would not be possible without great apps like Krita and MyPaint.I've seen Cheryl Texiera on the web series "My Future Girlfriend" and just could no resist doing some sketches of her.Krita 2.4 beta 6 (git), Wacom Intuos II on my SID Debian GNU/Linux desktop.

Since I've negeleted my health situation for quite a while I had to rest for a couple days this weekend. I the downtime, in which I was unable to read much, I've watched quite a bit of North American series.
The last one I've watched was Supernatural which is quite simplistic and unidimensional, but those elements are part of what make the series actually work.

As I was watching the 3rd season I decided to draw Ruby, the Katie Cassidy version. I hope to find the time to make a few sketches of the Genevive version as well as some of Meg, both versions.

I've been fooling around with krita and my tablet quite a lot lately. Just today I was able to work some long recurring problems about using tablets with a dual head desktop.

Tonight, just fot the fun of it, I did a quick - less than 20 minutes - sketch of Michael Chiklis as Victor Samuel "Vic" Mackey from the TV Series "The Shield".

I've been wanting to sketch him for quite a while now so I just did it. Unfortunately the image size was so small I could not work on it anymore. Instead of throwing it away I decided to give Inkscape's bitmap tracing capabilities a try. And it saved the sketch, as far as I'm concerned.

Alicia Silverstone - Batgirl [WA]

I never really understood how Joel Schumacher, who had done some marvelous movies, could do such a dreaded piece as Batman & Robin. I don't mean that it is poor job. It was so wretched that it obviously took a lot of effort to make that especific kind of movie.

How come the guy who made "St. Elmo's Fire", "The Lost Boys", "The Client", "Falling Down", "A Time to Kill", "8mm" and "Flatliners" could do something like "Batman & Robin" escapes my reasoning. Even with the studios forcing a "kid's friendly Batman" I cannot understand how he was able to do a campier version of Batman than the 60 TV series.

I try, really hard, to think of it as some kind of Warholesque apropriation of mas media material and an exposition of how stupid it can be.

The only thing I recall of this movie with a little enthusiasm is Alicia Silverstone taking the Batgirl mantle. The scenes were terrible but the imagery was enough to make me want to draw her quite often.

This is an Work Abandoned [WA], as I did lots of mistakes early on and do not with to redraw the whole thing. I'm just posting it as a reminder to myself to analise the structure and lighting better before shading and doing the textures...

I have just finished watching The Dead Zone, the entire TV series, and enjoyed it a lot.
Since I was already playing around with my Intuos, 2 and 4, I decided to give it a try with those characters while experimenting with krita, the KDE painting app. I'm still trying to figure ot how to work efficiently with krita since I've been an avid Gimp user for years. It seems to be worth the hassle as krita has its focus on ilustration and painting while Gimp in image retouching. It seems I can do a lot of stuff mixing them up.

After years of having bought my first tablet, a Wacom Intuos 2, I'm finally losing he dread and gaining a little confidence, as well as a decent grip, on the damn tool.

This is a roughly done sketch of the sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. Even though my knowledge of his works is quite limited, a fact that I'm plaining to retify soon, I loved everything I read from him as well as a few adaptations of his novels into movies. Just to name a few: "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (Blade Runner), Minority Report (Minority Report), Second Variety (Screammers) and The Impostor (The Impostor).

The Sarah Connor Chronicles

I've watched "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" about 3-4 times from start to finish and still haven't passed the exitement of watching Lena Headey playing Sarah Connor. She is way different from Linda Hamilton, so a initial disconfort was expected, but I believe that it is exactly why she works so well. Hamilton played Connor as a air head teenager and later as a action lead. Both caracterizations would get tiring after a few episodes. Headey did it differently: as a mother who was more prepared to fight the end of the world than to really grasp the basics of parenting. And all this while still being strong and sexy. You gotta love that.

Rock & Roll

Every once in a while we may find a movie that is not lost in preconceived notions of what kind of story is marketable but is, in it's own way, true to a less idealized world, closer to home even though it is still fiction and works really well at that.

Prey for Rock & Roll is this kind o movie, as well as "Chasing Amy", "Dark City", "Leaving Las Vegas", "THX-1138", etc. It first called my attention years ago, when I watched it on TV, and it still gets me every time I watch it.

While "Chasing Amy" and "Leaving Las Vegas" are, in their own unique ways, love stories, "Prey for Rock & Roll" is a movie about dreams, about the quest to achieving what we crave for.

Done some hatching and crosshatching using a tecnical pen (rotring 0.3). There are some good parts but the overall sketch I'm sure I blew. It looked a lot better on pencils.

amber - the colored tombs's heir

I've being trying to get a grasp of how to work with colors for quite a few years but it still seems as black magic to me. This is my latest adventure with watercolors and it shows how much I still need to learn about colors as well as painting.

ps. The scan is really bad because my trusty old scanjet 4c is dying on me so I had to use my new USB scanner for which the sane driver is still alpha quality. As soon as I get a decent scan I'll update it.

It may be a local comunity as it may be a global networked comunity but friendship is the gift that bind us, that gives us the pourpose to still try to interact with other human beings.

Honesty and Courage

We loose so much in our lives lacking the courage to do all the wild things we wish we had done. We, while trying to be nice, lack the honesty to tell people how we really feel. We use excuses to avoid awkward situations instead of building up the strength to handle it. We try to be more than we really are so someone will find us special or, in most circumstances, not cruel.

For a long while I had forgotten how it feels to be really honest and to have the guts to say everything I had to say. To be faithful to my feelings and my values while interacting with other people. For a long while I was afraid of never being good enough and it made me a coward in a sense that I had not the guts to surrender to the urges of my heart. For a long while I was politically correct, and I hated it because there is nothing as hurtful as noticing someone is saying something just to be nice, not meaning it.

Regret. The result of lack of honesty and courage is mostly regret. Regret we had not the balls to say what needed to be said, when it was need. Regret we did not do what our heart and soul shouted was the right thing to do. Regret that we did not mean what we said.

Regret we were not true to ourselves.

The important thing about self-discovery is that after all the frustration of understanding that you were not the person you thought you were. That you messed up and that it is time to accept that fact. To be honest to yourself about your limitations and your screw ups. Honesty and the courage to tell all those things that are not easy to say and even harder to listen.

After the nightmare I found in myself the courage to be honest to myself and to the others. Always.

BTW. The drawing above is a from a picture that I've tried to draw about a dozen times during the last year and a half. I finally got it right.

After the darkest night..

One day I woke up. Not that waking up after a good night of sleep but the kind of waking up after a trance, with that hang over feeling stuck in your head. I stoped and took a long look at my life. Slowly and carefully I noticed how blessed I had been and how much I had thrown away, as it was mere garbage. All the happiness I was blessed with I had discarded, all the love I had been given I returned with anger. Anger. The word and the meaning of it materialized in my life still haunt me every night as I go to sleep.

In a search for the meaning of so much anger and fear I've realized how my mind and soul were sickened for so long. I dove deeper into myself and analyzed my past mistakes. Relived my life and identified patterns of behavior and realized how much I had been wrong on so many aspects of my life and for how long.

Then, in a search for redemption I went after those I had hurt the most, said I was sorry and asked for help. Help to understand myself and my past errors. Help to become a better human being. And I went after all the help I needed so I could get better, not only physically or mentally but mainly as a man.

Now, as I reconstruct my life and myself, I spend sleepless nights sketching of better times, of times of passion and understanding. Now I use the blessings of the past to give me strength to build a better future which could not happen if I had not fallen. I'm finally happy with myself.

Happiness

This is a really powerfull image for me and is also an old unfinished comission to someone really special and who made me understand the meaning of the word happiness. The drawing is just another sketch I made trying to figure out the shapes on the picture since the photo I used for reference is of an awfuly low resolution and the lighting is quite problematic.

Since I promissed to post anything that is finished, even if the end result is not the least satisfatory, I'm posting this one.

Why do we keep hurting the ones we love the most?

I've promissed myself that from now on I'll mantain a certain consitency with the Free Technologies ideologies and practives: I'll release earlier and more often. And I'll not hold myself in case the end result is not that good. As Thomas Watson said "If you want to succeed, double your failure rate".

She is the one that inspired me to try drawing again and, ironicly, is the one I posted the least. I was affraid of not being capable to capture her beauty. I'm not afraid anymore as I have nothing to loose. I just liked the picture and resisted for a few days before I decided to draw it. Unfortunatly the inking is really irregular with really bad line definition and almost no volume definition besides the shapes themselves. Another time this one would go to the trash can but now I'm just posting it as I would do any other sketch.

This one of William Barbosa, one of the most engaged activist for the quilombola's rights and culture.

In this one I've tried something different as I used crow quill for the first time in a complete drawing, except of course for filling in the black spots. I'm satisfied with the result but still lack a lot of technique.

This is a sketch I made of Amber, the daughter of one of good friend who happens to live a little to far away for that ocasional visit.

It is just my first sketch of her and I do really think that I've spent to much time away from my pencil and brush. It hurt my hand while doing it and did no have enough precison nor movement to do it nicelly. I'll try again some other time.

This piece was hanging around the house for quite a while but for tactical reasons I chose not to publish it until now. Since the problems that restrained me from publishing it are gone I decided to share another sketch with anyone who may find it interesting.

The woman drawn in the picture is a friend of mine, who happens to work in techno-social inclusion iniciativas, who was traveling to the Amazon, that huge state at the top of Brasil, to visit some really distant communities which do not have much access to the conforts of the modern world, even less to the confort of the post-moden.
