Tatiana Barbosa - Colored

I just had to try coloring it before going to sleep. I do not know why I've been carving for color the last few days...

No so quick sketch before going to bed. I've always had problems to draw this particular subject. The sketch I did before was so bad that all I could say is "I'm sorry". Decided to give her another try doing a quick sketch before going to sleep. It wasn't so quick - took me about 4 hours - and is far from finished. Decided to post it anyway.

It started as a gift. 'Cause of some personal stuff I was not able to actually finish the lineart but was able to color it during my lunch break at work. Lineart - Krita 2.6 (git) Colors - MyPaint 1.1 (git)

[AR] Marcelo Freitas

A few months ago I decided that I had to learn music. I bought a guitar and tried to learn all by myself. It was a disaster. Learning from my mistake I researched good music schools in Curitiba and found Academia do Rock. As it turned out, it is not just a music school, it is a place where you are imersed in rock 'n roll and is treated as equal. It doesn't matter if it is your fist class ever or you are seasoned musician, everybody is treated equally. This is the first, of what I hope will be a fun series, of portraits of all those people that make that place so special. I started with one of the owners - Marcelo Freitas.

Another musician. I'm getting a little excited about sketching  musicians since I began studying guitar and bass.

Twin Falls Idaho

A good story does not need to be epic or complicated. Sometimes the simplest ideas, when well developed, can be a lot more efficient than big budgeted blockbusters.
Twin Falls Idaho is one of those movies that is beatiful in it's simplicity.

Princess Leia rendered using krita's medium hairy brush

It's been a while since I decided to experiment with the paint engines in krita but have never been able to use anything other than the pixel brush with a hard edge. Today I took on my own challenge and did a quick sketch of Princess Leia using only the hairy medium brush.

[WIP] Corey Taylor

About a year ago a friend introduced me to Stone Sour, and later Slipknot, sending me links to videos on youtube. I began to listen to the songs, pay attention to the lyrics and decided that I liked quite a lot. Then I found out about a book called "Seven Deadly Sins: Settling the Argument Between Born Bad and Damaged Good" written by Corey Taylor, the singer of both bands. I read most of it and liked it a lot. It is simple but goes direct to the point.

I decided to make this sketch as a gift for another friend, who loves slipknot quite a lot.

[WIP] Slutwalk Curitiba

There are times when just feeling the energy around you is more than enought to make you throw you camera back into the backpack and just enjoy the moment. That is how I felt when I went, accepting an invitation from Livia Cruz, to the Slutwalk Curitiba 2012.

I was amazed at how many different ideologies where united for a common cause. I saw neo-liberals, socialists, marxists, anarchists, and people who don't give a damn about ideologies. All there.

From all the things I saw there, the scene that was the most impressive was a young woman with her dauther, and husband at her side, using a makeup that resembled bloody tears. She was really crying, overwelmed by the joy of the event. It was a beatifull scene and, thanks to André Cruz, who gave me permition to use his pictures as basis for my sketches, I was able to make a quick sketch of it.

And, just to reinforce the messages of the walk: nobody should be judged by who they are or how they choose to live their lives. The only limits to one's freedom is another one's freedom.

R.I.P. Alcatraz

One difference, I've learned, of the USA's and Brazilian's TV productions - beeing it series or soap operas - is how easy it is to kill a show in the USA and how hard it is in Brazil.
In the US, if the series does not get the return desired it can be killed off right after the premier episode is broadcasted. Most shows do not even survive their first season.
In Brazil, it is quite the opposite. The TV networks produce their own content and arrange their assets in order to maximize their usefullnes. If a show is struggling, they rework the plot but are unable to cancel the show because they have nothing else to put in it's place. They drag the show for a few more months until they can decide the plot, assemble a cast, and do all the pre-production tasks necessary inside a huge, monolithic and burecratic corporation.
Alcatraz suffered the North American fate: it was canceled after their first season even though it had a promissing future.

RIP Alcatraz...

Two Rabbits

One of most wonderful experiences is to be completely surprised. And that is what happened to me when I first watched the movie “2 Coelhos”. The name of the movie, for itself, was quite clever. Came from the expression “matar 2 coelhos com uma cajadada” which loosely translates into “killing 2 rabbits with a single shot”.

I must admit: even being a proud Brazilian, I was never to found of Brazilian movies. They always seemed to lack something in the plot, in the development of th story, in the acting, in the editing or, quite often, in the main idea behind the whole movie. 2 Coelhos was quite different. It is not the most original movie, it does not try to be, nor it try to be artistic nor a celebration of some sorts. I is just a good mix of a drama, a love story, strategy and action all built on top of imperfect people. Every single character has it's flaws and strengths. The idea, the theme of the movie deserves attention too. As the title says, it is a plot to bring down a corrupt politician and a unstoppable mobster who are personifications of what the writer, director, producer and editor Afonso Poyart obviously sees as the two great problems in the country: corruption and greed.

The storytelling deserves attention too. The way the story is narrated is as important as the story itself. Being the protagonist a avid gamer, the movie has the feel of, and some simulated scenes, of a computer game. Animation is used quite often to enhance key points of the plot, especially when presenting characters and their agendas. I recommend the movie to anyone who wants to watch a well thought action movie with quite a few good twists and even surprises. The sketch above is of one of the main characters, Julia, played by the gorgeous and talented Alessandra Negrini.

[WIP] Carrie Fisher

This one is just Carrie Fisher, not as Princess Leia. It has a long way to go but it already works as an image. Since it is possible that this image will just be "sitting" in my InProgress folder for quite a while I decided to publish it. Guile Dias made a few nice comments about this one so I'm quite happy about this one.

Carrie Fisher - Princess Leia

I was never a big fan of StarWars. Not that I did not like it but the faerie tale aspects of it always bothered me. The hero had to be a prince, the endangered princess, the dark side of the force, all that stuff. But Carrie Fisher always amazed me. For her beauty as Princess Leia and for her life story, and the courage to tell it with a huge sense of humor, years latter. I've been doing a few sketches of her lately and, even though I'm not posting them in the ordered I produced them, I'll be posting them as soon as I feel comfortable with each piece. As expected, I'l start with the last one I did.

[WIP] Coloring Kirsten

As anybody who checked the last posts can deduce, I've been studying comic book coloring and digital painting lately. A lot of reading, a few experiments but nothing decent as of yet. Yesterday I decided to try coloring something so I took one of my old sketches, of Kirsten Dunst, and decided to splatter some colors over and see how it would go. [WIP] Cheryl Texiera digital painting

I've been reading a lot about digital painting lately. Colors where always a mystery for me, since I'm more used to drawing, so I decided to dedicate some time to it. Along with Larry Wall's caricature, this is one my first, ever, experiments with digital painting. This would not be possible without great apps like Krita and MyPaint. I've seen Cheryl Texiera on the web series "My Future Girlfriend" and just could no resist doing some sketches of her. Krita 2.4 beta 6 (git), Wacom Intuos II on my SID Debian GNU/Linux desktop.
